GFMAT students succeed in prestigious International United Nations Online Conference During Lockdown

10 Students from both Bay House and Brune Park have achieved brilliant success during the prestigious 8 week international Connected Delegates Programme for Model United Nations this term.

Over 300 students aged 16-17 attended in total from India, Spain, Qatar, Ireland and the UK and learnt about the United Nations, how Model United Nations conferences work as well as role-playing diplomatic relations in a variety of scenarios.  The sessions included addressing issues such as poverty, climate change, famine & also a wargame through the “Crisis Committee” re-enacting the Korean War with students from GFMAT representing USA, North Korea (DPRK), South Korea and China.  A full Model UN online conference also takes place on August 1st.

Sophie Gardiner said: “The Connected Delegates Programme was great for allowing us to understand the inner workings of the UN with experienced chairs who made the process really enjoyable. It was definitely the highlight of lockdown.”

Natalie Watford added: I found my experience with Model UN to be fun and stimulating. The course was very well taught though it does require you to be able to retain a lot of information.”

This programme consisted of a significant commitment by our students, attending weekly online sessions with other delegates, improving and developing diplomatic, negotiation and problem-solving skills on behalf of a number of countries.  This was particularly impressive during the lockdown’s remote learning phase with sixth form students engaging in addition to their A Level studies, and Brune Park and Bay House Year 11 pupils stepping up to participate even though their studies had officially ended.  A superb achievement!

Lily Holder also reported that: I found the MUN experience challenging at times but it was overall so enjoyable with a lovely community and a fun and welcoming atmosphere.”

William Dobbie adds: Having never done any MUN related work before, at first embarking on this 8 week journey was daunting, but the team at LIMUN guided us through every step along the way. I can’t wait to carry MUN on next year!”

Operated by the London MUN High School programme, Outreach Director Colin Jun said: “I am delighted with the success of all the students participating in the Connected Delegates Program, especially during the pandemic. Moreover, I would like to congratulate the students of Bay House Sixth Form for actively participating in the training sessions to improve themselves as the future leaders and learn the essential diplomacy skills for their future MUN journey.”

All of our students are grateful for the opportunity to have participated in this free online programme and thoroughly enjoyed their experience. Congratulations and well done to: William Dobbie, James Meadowcroft, Henry Hornby, Sophie Gardiner, Alice Wallsgrove, Kiera Buckland, Emily Ansell, Lily May Holder, Mia-jo Collins and Natalie Watford.

Bay House Sixth Form offers a weekly enrichment programme on Model United Nations and last year we attended the London MUN HS at King’s College London, winning awards for Best Delegation and a number of individual awards including Best Delegate.  Next year, we have the option to go to Oxford MUN, London MUN and LSE MUN.
