Role: Teacher of History and/or Teacher of History and Ancient History

Contract: Permanent

Start date: September 2018

Salary range: £22,915 - £38,650

Location: Bay House School, Gomer Lane, Gosport, Hants, PO12 2QP

Closing date: Apply immediately

Gosport & Fareham Multi Academy Trust are looking to appoint committed and outstanding History teachers to join our team at Bay House School. The ability to teach Ancient History would be considered an advantage and there may be opportunities for career development in this area.

The person appointed will be expected to teach across the full age and ability range and to play a part, together with other colleagues, in the continuing development of the department. One of the department's strengths is its strong sense of teamwork whereby all members feel able to contribute to the development of the department. We are committed to ensuring that all members of the History Department are able to have access to quality CPD. Our devolved budget allows us to be creative in how we achieve this.

Applications are welcome from either an NQT or someone wishing to further develop their career, with possible development opportunities to take on TLR responsibilities.

History is a very popular option at GCSE with fourteen groups in Years 10 and 11 following the OCR B SHP syllabus. At AS/A Level the AQA specification is offered with students following components on Tudor England, Weimar and Nazi Germany and a non-examined assessment on Stuart England. The department also offers Ancient History at AS/A2 and an ability to teach it would be a definite advantage.

There are currently seven groups studying History at Advanced Level in the Sixth Form and four studying Ancient History/Classical Civilisation. Last year 100% of the candidates achieved A*-C grades at A2 in History and Classical Civilisation, with 76% achieving A*-B. We are one of the best performing history departments of any Sixth Form colleges in Hampshire. At GCSE in 2017 the A*-C pass rate was 84%. This puts us in the top 0.5% of schools in the country in terms of progress made by pupils. The previous year it was 80% and in 2016 it was 81%. GCSE is, of course, a major focus and the department is determined to maintain its outstanding performance of recent years.

There are detailed schemes of work at Years 7 and 8 which are reviewed regularly and the department is committed to encouraging and developing exciting and innovative enquiry based learning.

Bringing History to life and encouraging pupils and students to engage with it beyond the classroom is a major factor in making the subject so popular at Bay House. The Year 9 trip to the battlefields and cemeteries of the Western Front in Belgium and France is the most popular and oversubscribed trip run by the school. The department also organises Ancient History trips to Italy and Greece and a History trip to Berlin. Year 11 pupils have the opportunity to visit the London Dungeons and our Year 10 pupils visit Portchester Castle for the local history component of their GCSE course. History staff are actively involved in trips organised and run by other departments too (i.e. the RE trip to Auschwitz). A range of speakers (Holocaust survivors, local O.A.P.s who were evacuees, historical re-enactors, Falklands veterans, university academics, etc.) are invited into school to address and engage pupils and students. Colleagues are positively encouraged to build on personal interests and expertise in order to enrich the extra-curricular life of the department and school. A willingness to be fully involved in this aspect of the provision of these learning experiences would be a required quality in the successful candidate.

The successful applicant will be responsible for a tutor group within a year system of pastoral care; tutors and their pupils move through the School with the same Head of Year.

In years 7 and 8 classes are taught in single gender, ability groups. In year 9, to sustain motivation and achievement the curriculum changes in design. With the current changes to the geography curriculum there are many exciting opportunities ahead as the department looks to develop and enhance our current geography provision. We need a person of vision to be part of driving this forward.

The person appointed will be expected to teach across the age and ability range and to play a part, together with other colleagues, in the continuing development of the department.

Our KS3 schemes of learning and assessments deliver an exciting and varied curriculum to pupils. We place great emphasis on providing a range of active teaching and learning techniques in our lessons to engage learners. To encourage independent home learning in a creative format we provide pupils with choices of tasks in terms of both content and presentation. Our creative approach to learning and the immense progress that learners make as a result of their engagement was recognised by the Geographical Association in June 2016. We were one of only fifteen schools in the country to be awarded ‘Centre of excellence’ status.

The department currently follows the AQA GCSE Geography and AQA AS and A Level syllabuses, which provides a good balance between physical and human geography. Geography is a very popular option at KS4 with a recording breaking 70% of pupils achieving A*-C in the summer 2017 examinations. This also resulted in a very pleasing ALPs 4 grading. We currently teach 18 GCSE classes and each year the number opting for geography increases. Our Sixth Form is also growing rapidly with four groups at both AS and A2 Level.

Our external examination results in Geography at Sixth Form have been classified as ‘outstanding’ with 90% of our students achieving A*-C grades, resulting in an ALPS 4 score in the 2017 summer exams. On top of this the department achieved an ALPS 2 score for the most recent AS Level examinations. Despite these successes, we continue to strive for excellence and development. One of the department's strengths is its strong sense of teamwork whereby all members feel able to contribute to the development of the department, through sharing lesson resources on the departments ‘one drive’ site.

Fieldwork is an important element in the department's teaching and several trips are arranged each year. This includes an annual AS/ A2 level trip to either Iceland or Sicily. Other more local fieldwork activities include a Year 10 trip to Christchurch Bay, sixth form trips to nearby Rowner, as well as further afield to West Wittering. We also encourage learning outside the classroom, with the use of Stokes Bay for coastal fieldwork and Stanley Park for investigating the characteristics of woodland habitats, both of which are on our doorstep.

We are committed to ensuring that all members of the Geography Department are able to have access to quality CPD, through a range of high quality professional learning provision.

The successful applicant will be responsible for a tutor group within a year system of pastoral care; tutors and their pupils move through the School with the same Head of Year.
